Set contains numerous engraved plates, many of which are foldouts. In general these plates depict landscapes, architectural landmarks, archaeological sites, flora/fauna, and other subjects. Landmarks and architectural sites include: Stonehenge, the palace at Versailles, Nanking, El Escurial (Spain), and others. Animals depicted include birds, fish, mamals, and reptiles, many of which, including the shark, hyena, and crocodile, are depicted sensationally and were clearly not drawn from life. Many plates are unsigned, though the architectural views are signed by the English engraver Benjamin Cole
